Confirmed by a post on the venue’s official Facebook page late Monday night, Jimmy Makarounis has passed away. Makarounis was the owner of renowned jazz club, Jimmy Mak’s, a haven for jazz musicians and lovers alike. A relic of the original Portland music scene, the venue had recently announced it was closing due to Makarounis’ cancer diagnosis. The New Year's Eve celebration was to be the last performance in the venue, featuring a 12-piece funk and soul band. Just two days after the final performance Jimmy Mak’s patrons said goodbye to their beloved friend and mentor.
NiaSounds artist Terry Robb personally knew Makarounis and had played the venue multiple times throughout his career. “He was a great, positive part of our music community.” said Robb, citing Jimmy Makarounis’ influence on the evolving Portland music scene. Robb is one of many local musicians who feels the loss within the Portland community.
Thanks for all you’ve done, Mr. Makarounis. Portland will never be the same.
